August is the month of hot summer nights and gearing up to go back to school, which makes it an ideal time to focus on health issues like immunizations.

Learn about observances in August and California nonprofit organizations that support causes related to them. State workers have an opportunity to celebrate and support causes by making a monthly payroll donation through Our Promise.

World Breastfeeding Week (Aug. 1-7)

Black woman breastfeeding her baby on the beach. Aug. 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week, an entire week to acknowledge breastfeeding as the first step to a healthy life and forms a natural and lasting bond between mother and child. For this reason, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) highly recommends babies be fed only breast milk for the first six months of life.This year, for World Breastfeeding Week 2021, the Pan-American Health Organization and World Health Organization have selected the theme: Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility.

National Minority Organ Donor Awareness Week (1-7)
